Polymer technology innovation

Butyl rubber

Keeping air in the tires is essential for electric vehicles, as this can directly impact the vehicle’s range. Typically, electric vehicles put more pressure on tires while offering a more efficient powertrain than Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles.

Underinflated tires are one area that can cause a negative impact on vehicle efficiency. Underinflation can reduce a vehicle’s range by between 3% and 7%, and can also shorten an electric vehicle’s tire life between 5% and 16%*.

To avoid premature tire wear and replacement, and increase value to customers, our product suite includes materials such as Exxon™ Halobutyl rubber, which helps electric vehicles maintain tire pressure and extend their range.

Specialty elastomers

The thermal management systems of electric vehicles are complex, yet critical. Cooling is needed for batteries, power electronics, electric motors, and the gear reducer. We are a leading producer of electric vehicle lubricants and coolants, but we also produce elastomers to help safely transport the fluids. The electric vehicle coolant hose produced from our Santoprene™ TPV is easy to use, weighing 35% less than EPDM hoses traditionally used for ICE vehicles, and is recyclable too. Better still, the electric vehicle coolant hose is produced from our Santoprene™ TPV provides high-level weathering, and chemical and abrasion resistance.
